Page 2 AAA and EFAST resources

 Page 2 :

AAA and EFAST

These are the original topics / modalities in ED point of care Ultrasound

This page will cover AAA and EFAST in more detail in the future  .

In the meantime to learn everything there is to know about EFAST and AAA there are a multitude of sources , here are a few examples

-EFAST and AAA modules via ACEM

-EFAST and AAA modules via POCUS 101

-Introduction to bedside USS volumes 1 (via I tunes free or via UTEC NSW)

-Core Ultrasound / 5 minutes sono also has free open access teaching modules

Prior to the AAA and EFAST teaching sessions there will be some basic mcqs that are based on the information in these sights

AAA

HOW TO BECOME CREDENTIALED (under ACEM recommended  training guidance)

The summary is to fill out  a log book ( at least 50 % complete  ) and get a supervisor to watch you scan

1) summary of syllabus and what a FORMATIVE and SUMMATIVE scan should look like

Syllabus ( ACEM)

To competently perform AAA ultrasound, trainees are expected to:

  • Understand Ultrasound Physics and Machine Operation: Grasp the principles of ultrasound wave physics, recognize common artifacts, and adeptly use machine controls for image optimization.
  • Identify Normal and Abnormal Aortic Anatomy: Recognize the sonographic appearance of the abdominal aorta and detect aneurysmal changes.
  • Ensure Patient Safety: Apply knowledge of bio-effects, adhere to infection control protocols, and maintain equipment properly.
  • Apply Clinical Integration: Interpret ultrasound findings in the context of the patient’s clinical presentation to inform management decisions.

Example of core reading are listed above - complete any of the above

Example of FORMATIVE scan linked to here

Example of SUMMATIVE scan ( the same as formative scan but must be passed without need for further prompting or advice for supervisor) supervisor must have a sonologist qualification ( CCPU equivalent or  higher)

Example of log

Echo log

Tidy ultrasound

To become credentialled in AAA , trainee must have have at least completed half of the required log of scans ( ie 7 /15), with intention of completing the rest within one year  and have at least two positive AAA Scans logged . They must have completed core reading (listed on this blog) and have attended a suitable workshop . They must have two formative and one summative scan ( that must be passed) .

EFAST

Summary EFAST :  TRAIN AND BECOME CREDENTIALED (under ACEM recommended  training guidance)

1) summary of syllabus and what a FORMATIVE and SUMMATIVE scan should look like

Syllabus (ACEM)

To become credentialed in EFAST , trainee must have at least completed have of the required log of scans with intention of completing the rest within on year and have at least some positive EFAST  scans logged . They must have completed core reading and or attended a suitable workshop . The must complete formative scans and 1 summative scan that must be passed .

Summary of syllabus EFAST from ACEM For the EFAST examination, which assesses for free fluid and pneumothorax in trauma patients, trainees should:

Master Thoracic and Abdominal Imaging: Evaluate for pericardial effusion, hemothorax, pneumothorax, and intra-abdominal free fluid.

Understand Lung Ultrasound Principles: Identify lung sliding, B-lines, consolidations, and pleural effusions.

Integrate Findings into Trauma Assessment: Use EFAST results to make rapid decisions in the management of trauma patients.

Assessment and Learning Strategies

Competency in these POCUS applications is developed through:

Structured Education Programs (SEP): Formal teaching sessions covering theoretical knowledge and practical skills( work shop and links above)

Self-Directed Learning (SDL): Independent study to reinforce and expand upon learned concepts.  ( see links above )

Supervised Training (ST): Hands-on practice under the guidance of experienced clinicians. ( during time on “shop floor “ in ed

Workplace-Based Assessments (WBA): Evaluations conducted during clinical practice to assess proficiency.- this is in the form of summative and formative scans

These learning strategies are designed to ensure that trainees can perform POCUS effectively and safely, integrating ultrasound findings into patient care decisions.
